What to Expect During and After Blepharoplasty Surgery
The Eyes Have It: What You Need to Know About Blepharoplasty
If you’ve ever considered getting an eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, you may have some questions about the procedure. According to New York City-based plastic surgeons Melissa Doft, MD, Lara Devgan, MD, and Chang, MD, the surgery is generally considered to be a safe and relatively easy process.
Dr. Doft reassures patients that upper eyelid surgery is not as painful as one might think, with skin tightening occurring within four to five weeks post-op. Dr. Devgan advises patients to expect some swelling and recommends using ice to help with the recovery process. Both Drs. Devgan and Rosenberg suggest having a private nurse for the first night after surgery to ensure a smooth recovery.
Lower eyelid procedures may take longer to resolve due to more significant swelling, but Dr. Rosenberg estimates that patients will see results within three weeks for upper lids and six weeks for lower lids. Over the course of three to six months, the eyelids will continue to tighten and improve.
While blepharoplasties are generally safe, there are some risks associated with the procedure. Physical complications like dry eye or visual acuity issues are usually temporary but can be permanent in rare cases. Dr. Chang notes that an overly taut sensation in the lid can occur but will correct itself quickly.
The most serious risk, according to Dr. Rosenberg, is improper patient selection, which can lead to unnecessary treatment. It’s important for patients to consult with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure they are getting the right procedure for their needs.
Costs for blepharoplasty can vary depending on location and surgeon skill, but in New York City, patients can expect to pay at least $8,000 for an upper eyelid procedure and $9,000 for a lower one. Dr. Devgan explains that the complexity of the surgery and the customization of results can affect the overall cost.
If you’re considering blepharoplasty, make sure to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss your options and ensure a safe and successful outcome.
