In a shocking turn of events, plastic surgeon Arian Mowlavi, also known as “Dr. Laguna,” has reached a multi-million dollar settlement with dozens of his former patients. One of these patients, who goes by the pseudonym Bobbi to protect her identity, shared her harrowing experience with NBC4 I-Team.
Bobbi initially sought out Dr. Laguna in 2019 for liposuction around her bra line. However, she claims that he convinced her to undergo additional VASER liposuction on other parts of her body. Just two weeks later, Bobbi woke up in the burn center at UCI Medical Center in a state of septic shock.
The Medical Board of California recently filed a new accusation against Mowlavi, with Bobbi as Patient A in the case. The accusation details Bobbi’s condition, stating that she arrived at the hospital in septic shock with multiple organ failures and required surgery to remove necrotic skin.
Bobbi’s story is just one of many, as more than two dozen patients have joined a civil lawsuit against Mowlavi for battery, medical malpractice, and more. Court documents reveal that a confidential settlement has been reached, with Mowlavi’s insurance company agreeing to pay $6 million to the 36 plaintiffs.
Former patient Chalene Johnson, a social media influencer, has also spoken out about her experience with Dr. Laguna. Johnson expressed her frustration with the lack of transparency in the medical industry, emphasizing the importance of knowing a surgeon’s history and track record before undergoing a procedure.
The accusations against Mowlavi include gross negligence, dishonesty, and general unprofessional conduct. The Medical Board will hold a hearing to determine the fate of Mowlavi’s medical license.
Despite the settlement and ongoing legal battles, Bobbi is still facing medical bills totaling close to $2 million. The full extent of Mowlavi’s actions and the impact on his patients continue to unfold as investigations into his practices continue.
