Patients seeking cheap plastic surgery abroad are returning to the UK with horrifying complications, costing the NHS millions of pounds to fix. According to a survey by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, taxpayers have footed a bill of nearly £5 million to correct 324 botched operations in the past three years, averaging around £15,000 per procedure.

Many patients returning from popular health tourism destinations like Turkey are reporting severe complications, including wounds that won’t heal and life-threatening sepsis. One patient, Claudia Rogers, 28, shared her harrowing experience after a bargain boob job in Istanbul left her with a raging infection, requiring eight weeks of hospital visits.

Despite selecting a surgeon based on positive testimonials, Claudia ended up with a different surgeon on the day of her procedure. She described the ordeal as the “worst decision” of her life, as she faced numerous complications post-surgery. Eventually, Claudia had to self-fund corrective treatment at a private aesthetics clinic.

The president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, Marc Pacifico, highlighted the increasing burden on the NHS due to corrective surgeries for botched operations abroad. He emphasized the need for discussions with the government to alleviate this strain on the healthcare system.

Stella Vig, the national medical director for NHS Secondary Care and Quality, expressed concern over the pressure placed on clinical teams when patients experience complications from cosmetic surgeries abroad. She emphasized the importance of addressing this issue to ensure the delivery of essential care within the NHS.

With four in five UK surgeons now handling more corrective cases than ever, the impact of cheap plastic surgery abroad is becoming increasingly evident.
