North Korea Denies Plastic Surgery Rumours Surrounding Kim Jong-un

In a fiery response to persistent rumours, North Korea has vehemently denied claims that leader Kim Jong-un underwent plastic surgery to resemble his revered grandfather, Kim Il-sung. The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) issued a scathing commentary on Wednesday, criticizing the “sordid” media reports as a “hideous criminal act.”

Speculation about Kim Jong-un’s resemblance to Kim Il-sung has been circulating for some time, fueled by the leader’s efforts to evoke memories of his grandfather through his appearance and public gestures. However, KCNA dismissed the idea of the young leader, in his late 20s, undergoing plastic surgery as “unimaginable” and condemned the reports as “sordid hackwork by rubbish media.”

The anger from Pyongyang was triggered by a Chinese report last week, which claimed a North Korean official confirmed the plastic surgery rumours. While KCNA referenced the Chinese report, it directed its fury towards South Korean newspapers, warning that those who “hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership” would face consequences.

Kim Il-sung, who passed away in 1994, still holds a revered status in North Korea, with many citizens showing quasi-religious devotion to the “Great Leader.” His birthday is a public holiday, and he is designated as the country’s “Eternal President” in the constitution.

China, possibly concerned about causing offense, swiftly rejected the plastic surgery rumours through its official Xinhua news agency. This move comes after a previous incident in which a Chinese newspaper mistakenly treated a satirical article from a US website as genuine, naming Kim Jong-un as the “Sexiest Man Alive.”

The denial from North Korea and China highlights the sensitivity surrounding the topic of Kim Jong-un’s appearance and the legacy of Kim Il-sung. The ongoing speculation and denials only add to the intrigue surrounding the secretive regime and its enigmatic leader.
