Experts from India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka Address Plastic Pollution Concerns at Ahmedabad Workshop
Experts from India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka gathered in Ahmedabad for a two-day event to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution in coastal regions. The event, hosted by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) for the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge supported by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), brought together youth participants from various organizations to brainstorm solutions to reduce plastic consumption and promote eco-friendly alternatives.
During the event, speakers highlighted the detrimental effects of plastic on marine life and the environment, emphasizing the urgent need for action. Madhavi Joshi, director of CEE Academy, shared success stories from previous challenges, such as a project in coastal Gujarat where cloth bags made from throwaway textile waste have replaced single-use plastic bags, significantly reducing plastic consumption in the area.
Participants from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will collaborate with local organizations in their respective countries to implement similar initiatives. Gayatri Raghwa, senior consultant (education) at UNEP India, and Kartikeya Sarabhai, director of CEE, stressed the importance of youth engagement and cross-border partnerships in tackling plastic pollution along large coastlines.
As the fifth round of the global event kicks off, the focus remains on knowledge-sharing, taking action, and advocating for sustainable practices. With the support of organizations and individuals committed to making a difference, the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge continues to inspire positive change in the fight against plastic pollution.
